'For, by and about'
Sharing Hope is a new NAMI program designed for, by and about the Black/African Ancestry community. It’s a way to specifically address cultural stigma around mental illness, as well as the major stressors and social aspects that affect community mental health.
This group might be for you if:
- You're seeking culturally relevant mental health support and connection
- You want to explore mental wellness through the lens of shared cultural experiences
- You'd be interested in hearing from a mental health professional of color
- You'd like to learn about local resources and opportunities
Some of the topics we cover
- Cultural stigma and mental health
- Self-care and healing
- Finding culturally competent therapists
- Signs and symptoms of certain conditions
- Overcoming barriers to care
Support without pressure
At its core, Sharing Hope is a conversation. But it's more than that, too. Here's what you can look forward to:
Trained peer facilitators
Leading the program are trained volunteers who come from Black/African Ancestry communities.
A multimedia approach
Visiting speakers, video and other elements help conversations remain dynamic.
Flexible format
Each conversation stands on its own … but also fits within a larger, three-part series.
Frequently Asked Questions
Don’t worry, others were wondering the same thing.
All NAMI programs are offered at no cost to participants.
You’ll get a chance to share what’s going on in your life … but you can also just listen and learn. Participate to whatever degree you feel comfortable.
Yes, everything shared in the group stays within the group. We ask all participants to respect each other’s privacy.
No, Sharing Hope is a community conversation series focused on wellness and support. While our facilitators are trained in mental health awareness, this is not therapy or clinical treatment.
Not at all. Whether you’re managing your own mental health journey, supporting a loved one, or simply wanting to learn more about mental wellness in our community, you’re welcome here.
We understand these concerns deeply. Our spaces are specifically designed to be free of judgment, recognizing the unique challenges and pressures our community faces. Many participants find strength in connecting with others who understand these shared experiences.
